Wrap-Up of Game #2

Eagles Team Parents

A well played and hard fought game this week
This was a much tougher, and more experienced opponent this week than in our 1st game
- But our team played hard all game long, never gave-up, and kept their sportsmanship even in defeat
     - Fantastic job to everybody

Game Result:
Eagles: 6
Colts: 25

Team Highlights:
- We had another rushing TD this week - Outstanding!!
- And we had several key flag pulls on their running plays
- Also, just a side note, the coach from the other team contacted me, and commented that we were one of the best overall teams he's played in the last couple seasons
   - He would be interested in having an instructional scrimmage with us if we were up for it (see potential additional practice comment in "follow-up" section below)

What went well:

Running plays:
Our running plays were on target again this week
- We had quick & clean exchanges between the QB’s and the RB's (no dropped ball's again this week - Awesome!!!)
- And our RB’s were quick to take the hand-off & turn up the field.
(Great job QB’s & RB’s)

Run Defense:
Our run defense was solid again this week
- The kids also did a great job staying in their home position and pulling flags, giving their RB's little or no gain on most of their running plays
(Great job defense – both squads)

What we can work on:

Passing Defense:
Most of our opponents points this week came from their QB passing plays
- We really haven't had much time to practice pass coverage, but it's really just a matter of knowing you zone coverage area, and not letting the WR's get past our defenders
(We'll work on pass coverage this week at practice )

RB Timing:
Another issue this week was that our timing was off for the fake RB and the real RB at the QB handoff location
- One of the key items for all of our plays is that the fake RB's need to cause confusion for defense at the QB hand-off location and "sell the fake"
(Pulling some of the defenders with them and away from the real RB)
- If the fake RB's miss their timing, or if they don't make it into the handoff area at all, our opponent's defense can all key in on the real RB and simply go for their flags only
Again, our opponent this week had a much more experienced defense, and they were watching for the ball exchange very carefully
(We'll work on RB timing at this week's practice)

RB's going in the intended direction of the play
Lastly, we also struggled a little bit with our running directions
- By design, our plays are set up not only to confuse the defense, but also force the defense to spread out (based on the multiple directions the 3 potential RB's go in)
  - This hopefully gives the actual RB less defenders to run against and more room to run
This week we had some RB's stopping at the QB hand-off, and trying to go in a different direction
- And while having improvisation skills as a RB is important (and we definitely want the kids to look down field and choose the best area to run the ball), we also want the kids to understand the intended direction of the play (If the RB changes their running direction, they can sometime run right back into the area where the defense was waiting)

Follow-up Items:

Team Pictures this week:
Team pictures are this week (5/3). Our scheduled time slot is 11:15 pm (prior to our pre-game practice)
- Please plan on being at the picture location off to the side of the field at 11:15 am
We'll send out another note this week, with instructions in how to pre-order
(You get 4 free wallets if you pre-order on line)

Potential additional practice through the week:
- If the team would be interested, we could potentially have 1 additional practice through the week
- This practice would be geared at improving specific skills (RB cuts, QB throwing, WR catching), something that's difficult to work on in the pre-game practice
- We could even invite another team to have a scrimmage w/ us during that time (for instance the Colts coach asked if we would be interested in scrimmaging his team again)
Best weeknight evening for the coaches seems to be a Thurs evening

We would like to know what level of interest and participation we could get from the team:
Please let us know by responding w/ a:
1) We are interested, and Thurs night would work
2) We are interested, but Thurs night does not work
3) We are not interested in an additional practice

End of Season Party
We received some responses on this, but I would like to make sure we have everyone's input before setting a date:

If you haven't had a chance to respond, please let us know your preference w/ a
1) Party on either the 13th or 14th is OK
2) Prefer on the 13th but either is OK
3) Only the 13th is OK
4) Prefer on the 14th, but either is OK
5) Only the 14th is OK
6) Neither the 13th nor the 14th is OK
That should be it for now
- Let us know if you have any questions / concerns

Sincerely,
Greg Thomas
