GREETINGS PARENTS AND PLAYERS:     \

We had our first game simulation against another team last night.  It gave me the opportunity to see the guys in game action.  We had some good things that happened and some that were areas that we need to improve.

I was pleased overall with effort and pitching.  We had some struggles with throws in the infield especially with throws past our first baseman.  I think that some of our over throws were due to being amped up for first game experience.  We have also identified 1B being a spot where we will do some extra drills to get better.   We had a couple of inning where the defense allowed zero runs.

Pitchers were sharp until guys began to throw non fastballs in bad counts.  The guys were allowed to throw what they wanted last night so that they will have an experience to learn as we discuss the need to throw fastballs for strikes and occasionally work in off speed in 0-2 counts and 1-2 counts only.  I will have discussion with all pitchers regarding this and the greater effectiveness that those pitches will have moving forward.

I liked our line up as it seemed that we did not have a weak spot and all guys looked comfortable at the plate.  We had some lapses on the base paths specifically when it came to running hard through the bag at first, consistently getting into a routine to get a good lead and jump from first and sliding into stolen bases every time.  We had several guys who slid and got in under tags and guys who decided not to slide and were outs.   We will work on this on Wednesday night.

Highlights included:

Himesh                 made excellent catch in center field, effective start, throwing strikes and getting ground ball out opportunities for the infield,  reached base and ran aggressively with several steals, fastest on team

Zach                       has big arm from short, should be able to settle in and become a shut-down SS, pitched well and can overpower guys using the fastball, hit the ball on the button

Seth                       aggressive approach at the plate turned into two sharply hit balls, came in to settle down infield at 1B,  ran bases hard and got a couple of steals, 2nd fastest on team

Adam                    first year player, looked good in the field and drew two walks and then listened to coaches and ran well, scored from 2B on single up the middle

Will                         new bat came through, sharply hit ball to RF drove in 2 runs, played infield and outfield and ran well, could have gotten under tag at 2B with slide

Davis                     pitched well, threw a bunch of strikes, effectively worked in curve for strike out

Robert                  put ball in play at the plate, caught a good game, needs to work to help pitchers with positioning and framing

Braxton                played infield and outfield, got on base and then ran hard, listens to base coaches and gets good jump uses speed, scored run

Matthew             struggled a little at 1B but kept head in the game and had good at bats, stole a base and scored run, came back in at 1B and worked and stayed positive

Parker                   played solid 2B, recorded infield out to get out of bottom of first, good at bats with big hit, ran bases well, is faster that he thinks and can afford to get bigger leads and jumps

Brian                      played LF without any opportunities, probably too much talent to keep out of infield, good plate appearances, came in to relieve catching duties

Caleb                     missed scrimmage, but can play behind the plate and has looked good at the plate
